• Mold spots that keep returning after cleaning. Surface mold wipes off. Mold that blooms through paint or caulk lines means the HardieBacker behind it is holding moisture against the studs. In Las Vegas, this usually traces back to a missing or punctured vapor barrier during original construction.
• Grout lines turning dark or crumbling. This isn’t always a grout problem. If the cement board underneath has degraded, the tile loses its stable bedding and the grout takes all the stress. We’ve re-grouted showers in Rhodes Ranch only to be called back six months later because the board was shot.
• Musty smell that intensifies after shower use. HardieBacker that’s absorbed water doesn’t dry quickly in enclosed wall cavities, especially in bathrooms with poor exhaust ventilation. That smell is your warning before visible damage appears.
